A different ‘Beat’ – The Summer Beat concert series ends its first season next week and looks to expand in the fall.
Over the last month, the Capital Heights neighborhood has enjoyed weeks of free live concerts and good times as the Summer Beat concert series debuted in mid June.
The six-week string of shows that takes place at a bandstand at 4264 Capital Heights Ave. (Map it!) has two dates left—tonight’s show featuring M.J. and the Redeemers, and next Friday’s show with Left Hand Luke. The music starts at 5:30 p.m.
However, Summer Beat has a bright future as its popularity has grown quickly.

“The response has been great,” Jamie Bell, the MC and ambassador for the event, says.
“Our first concert had about 360 attendees, and each concert has grown. Interest is growing, and more people want to get involved.”
Bell says the series promotes the Mid City community and brought its neighbors together.
“Mid City is a neighborhood where you can take your dogs for a walk or sit outside and talk to your neighbors,” she says. “It’s very eclectic. There’s plenty to do. We just want to keeping bringing things there. We don’t want it to fall by the wayside.”
Since the first concert, more sponsors and musicians have been asking how to get involved, according to Bell. With that response, the organizers are now pinning down dates for a fall slate of shows.
“I feel like this has been a trial run,” she says. “Now that we’ve proven it can be successful, we’re ready to branch out. The range and variety of everything will be different.”
