What’s fresh in February at the Baton Rouge farmers markets

Head to the Red Stick Farmers Market this month for a combination of hearty vegetables and delicious desserts.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this month you can find made-from-scratch pies, cookies and sweet breads. If Mardi Gras treats are more up your alley, you can find king cake at the market, too.

As for produce, shoppers can find leafy greens like spinach, mustard greens, collard greens, kale and spinach. Other options include the root vegetables like carrots, turnips and sweet potatoes. Or, go the citrus route by stocking up on navel oranges, grapefruit and lemons.

If you’re looking for locally sourced meat and seafood, shop the Louisiana wild-caught shrimp and fish, or lamb, beef, pork and chicken from area farmers. Other available items include microgreens, hydroponic lettuce, stone-ground grits, dairy, honey, preserves and pickles.

The farmers market is held Saturdays, 8 a.m.-noon, on 5th and Main streets downtown and Thursdays, 8 a.m.-noon, at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at 6400 Perkins Road.
