Baton Rouge Gallery hosts ‘Before the Fork’ exhibit opening tonight

Four artists are taking a look at what food can tell us about ourselves—from the state’s agricultural economy to modern food packaging to the use of GMO crops—with a new exhibit at BREC’s Baton Rouge Gallery, “Before the Fork.” The gallery will host a free opening reception Wednesday, May 4, 7-9 p.m.

The exhibit features works from Frankie Gould, Diane Hanson, Ross Jahnke and David Scott Smith and is presented in partnership with Slow Food Baton Rouge.

On Saturday, May 7, the gallery will host a special panel discussion for its ARTiculate Artist Talk series. 225 food writer, blogger and author Maggie Heyn Richardson will moderate the discussion on farm-to-table trends. Panelists include artist and LSU AgCenter Communications Director Frankie Gould, Slow Food Baton Rouge President Carl Motsenbocker, City Pork’s Corporate Chef Ryan André, Fullness Farms owner Grant Guidroz, artist David Scott Smith and artist Ross Jahnke.

Micah Martello bringing his award-winning creole cuisine to White Star Market

New Orleans Chef Micah Martello is coming home to Baton Rouge to serve up his award-winning creole dishes in the White Star Market that’s planned on Government Street.

Martello, who operates King Creole in New Orleans at the city’s St. Roch Market, is calling his new venture Fete au Fete. He is also rebranding his New Orleans operations as Fete au Fete.

“I feel like the Baton Rouge market is going to be tremendous,” says Martello, who adds he is considering bringing his New Orleans food truck to Baton Rouge.

Girl Scouts awards luncheon set for next week

The Girl Scouts Louisiana East, which serves New Orleans and Baton Rouge, is hosting its 2016 Women of Distinction awards luncheon Wednesday, May 11, at the Renaissance Baton Rouge Hotel.

The luncheon begins at noon with a VIP Champagne reception at 11 a.m. Tickets for the luncheon are $75 per person and tickets for the luncheon and reception are $100. All proceeds from the event benefit Girl Scouts Louisiana East. Tickets can be purchased here.


Lenny’s Subs looking to open in Baton Rouge

Memphis-based sandwich chain Lenny’s Subs is looking to open its first Louisiana restaurant in Baton Rouge.

After signing the deal to do so, the company may open multiple restaurants in the Baton Rouge metro area. Lenny’s has more than 100 locations in 12 states, including 21 in Texas.


Dairy Queen to open 50 Louisiana locations

In an attempt to reenergize the brand, Dairy Queen is currently planning to add 50 Dairy Queen Grill and Chill locations in Louisiana in the next 10 years. Two to four of these locations will be added to the Baton Rouge market.

As of now, Dairy Queen has three area locations, with one on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard, one on Hooper Road and one on Juban Road in Denham Springs.
