BITES: Fresh Kitchen

A healthy lunch, or even a healthy dinner, can sometimes be hard to come by. During a busy weekday, we find ourselves working through lunch and speeding home at the end of the day with little interest in stopping at the store to seek out the ingredients for a healthy dinner.

Fresh Kitchen has made that routine a little less time-consuming and much healthier since it opened in August. The sleekly designed takeout shop on Corporate Boulevard offers ready-to-go meals like chicken curry, turkey ragu and vegetarian chili with an eye toward minimally processed and seasonal foods. They also offer breakfast items and a full salad bar.

Most of the ingredients are sourced locally and everything is cooked in-house, needing little more than a minute in the microwave before digging in.

We tried the Bison Grain Bowl (small portion: $6.25), featuring ground bison meat, Louisiana purple rice, three types of beans, quinoa, green onions and white Cheddar cheese. Besides being packed with protein, it was also packed with flavor, and the small portion satisfied an early-evening hunger.

As a plus for the health-conscious, Fresh Kitchen’s caters to several dietary restrictions. Consider this food on the go that you can feel good about. freshkitchenbr.com
