Music picks: River City Jazz Masters, Neutral Milk Hotel

River City Jazz Masters brings renowned jazz vocalist
Cécile McLorin Salvant performs Wednesday night at the Manship Theatre as part of the Arts Council’s River City Jazz Masters series. Salvant is known for her exquisite jazz vocals and won the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Her U.S. debut, WomanChild, won Jazz Album of the Year in the 62nd Annual DownBeat International Critics Poll. The poll also named Salvant the top female vocalist of 2014 and a Rising Star jazz artist and female vocalist. Tickets for Wednesday’s show start at $25. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit manshiptheatre.org or artsbr.org.

Indie folk band Neutral Milk Hotel spends two nights in the Capital City
Neutral Milk Hotel is an unlikely music success story. After two critically acclaimed releases in the late ’90s, the band and its reclusive frontman Jeff Mangum went on an indefinite hiatus. Last year, the band reunited, playing sold out shows across the country. The band has continued touring, playing songs from its 1998 gem In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. The band will perform two shows at The Varsity. While Friday night’s show is sold out, tickets are still available for Thursday’s performance. Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $32.50. Circulatory System will open. Get more information.
