Movie Picks: ‘Nightcrawler’

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the thriller ‘Nightcrawler’
The Oscar race starts early with this new drama. In Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a desperate reporter hoping to make a name for himself in the ultra-competitive Los Angeles journalism world. When the film debuted at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, critics championed Gyllenhaal’s performance, comparing it to Robert De Niro’s breakout in Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. To prepare, Gyllenhaal lost 20 pounds and worked out daily to create Bloom’s gaunt appearance. The film comes from the mind of screenwriter/director Dan Gilroy, who previously wrote The Bourne Legacy and The Fall. The supporting cast is also worth watching and features turns from former LSU athlete-turned-actor Michael Papajohn, Rene Russo and Bill Paxton. Rated R. View the trailer below.
