Fast Break: Fried chicken perfection at Chicken Shack

Founded in 1935, Chicken Shack has spent almost 80 years serving its “knuckle-suckin’ good” fried chicken to the Baton Rouge community. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve only become acquainted with Chicken Shack in the past few years. But I’m making up for lost time by recommending a visit to anyone who brings up a love of fried chicken. There are three locations and a food truck, but the restaurant at 3161 Mohican St. is my favorite and offers the best sides. Plus, it has chicken wallpaper.

Now, let’s talk fried chicken. I typically gravitate toward white meat, even though it has a tendency to be dry. In this case, the meat hiding beneath the thick, crispy batter is incredibly juicy and tender. Each piece is fried to golden perfection—so perfect that you’ll want to eat so much more than you typically would. And you should.

I order the two-piece with whatever greens they have that day (mustard, turnip or collard) and baked macaroni and cheese (all for $5.99). Those two sides are only available on certain days, but the equally delicious rice dressing is a menu staple that you should order at least once.

To find out the daily specials, consult the website, or better yet, call them up and listen to their recorded message of specials each day at 383-0940.
