Fast Break: The Rum House

Since opening in late March, the Baton Rouge location of The Rum House has been busy and buzzing at 2112 Perkins Palms Ave. The restaurant is known most for its laid-back attitude and Caribbean-style fare.

This week, the 225 team drove over to The Rum House for lunch, taking on the restaurant’s wide selection of tacos. We sampled a variety of tastes. Among our favorites were the Brisket and Lamb Vindaloo. The latter balances red curried lamb medallions and mint yogurt chutney quite well and is topped with sliced plantains. Another favorite was the Flaked Fish, featuring grilled Mahi Mahi, asparagus, Creole tomato chutney and fresh dill tartar sauce. Other tacos didn’t pan out quite as well, such as the Chili Glazed Shrimp, whose main ingredient didn’t taste fresh.

However, the toppings were the real stars. Each corn tortilla was overstuffed with items such as fried leeks or shallots, crispy duck skin or lime cream, kicking an otherwise routine item up a few notches. For our sides, we all enjoyed the fried plantains. Elsewhere, we sampled some delightful pickled veggies that came with our salsa and queso.

As far as atmosphere and service are concerned, the restaurant can do no wrong. On the food side, the flavors are almost there, enough to warrant a repeat visit.

The Rum House is open seven days a week, Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m.—Staff report
