225 Press Play: Mahayla – Preview the band’s new single, ‘Kristy McNichol’

225‘s new feature, Press Play, gives you an exclusive listen to a local band’s latest songs before the release date.

Dave Fera is no stranger to new beginnings.

In the ’90s, his alternative rock band The Seymores enjoyed a brief stint on mid-major labels before calling it quits around 1998. Fera later moved to New Orleans, where he’s been prolific in his songwriting ventures with bands such as the underrated and now defunct Big Blue Marble, The Grasshoppers and Mahayla.

He sings and plays guitar with the latter of those three acts, which has just released a studio album, electricspaceagesweetheart. In between ballads like “Just Call” and “Sitting at the Table,” the band has the ability to speed along the highway with rockers like “Kristy McNichol,” a track 225 is premiering below.

It’s a song that wouldn’t sound out of place on a teenager’s mixtape made specifically for playing endless games of Pac-Man at the local arcade. If this is another new beginning for Fera, Mahayla sounds like a fruitful collaboration will be hearing more of in years to come.

Mahayla will perform Friday at Chelsea’s Café with Baton Rouge band The Widowers. The show starts at 10:30 p.m. Cover is $5.
