Well Suited: Nancy Drew

Growing up, Nancy Drew was one of my favorite series to read. I never read The Hardy Boys, but am sure I would have loved them just the same. Mystery, intrigue, espionage, and adventure were so far removed from my personality, and as I read about Nancy’s adventures I would dream of how fun sleuthing must be. But I never got the gumption to do it myself. Much like Saved by the Bell, the college years were not as interesting to me, so I stuck to the younger stories. I never knew that the series written under the name Carolyn Keene was actually ghostwritten by numerous authors over the years! After watching both Nancy Drew movies—the Maggie Lawson version as well as the Emma Roberts one—I prefer the costuming in the Emma Roberts version. My vintage-loving heart skips a beat each time I see a Peter Pan collar and penny loafers.

This outfit is all about what I think Nancy Drew would wear today. A tweed mini skirt that used to be an eye sore—all it took to transform it was a new hem length—paired with a neutral sweater is a good base, and both are modern pieces. Adding a vintage riding jacket gives a nod to the past. Trendy colored tights add a modern flair and a pop of teal keeps me from blending into the winter browns around me. A scarf for extra warmth is perfect for the mad cold spell we’re having and lace-up boots keep my legs warmer than any pair of pants could. I don’t know about you ladies out there, but I get so sick of pants by this time of winter, and tights with insulated boots are a great solution to the need for skirted freedom.

What do you think? Would Nancy approve?
