Whispers

We told you to keep up with Christopher Tyson. The attorney and LSU law professor made the list of our 25 local Twitter accounts to follow in our June cover story, and recently he announced, via social media, his candidacy for Louisiana Secretary of State in 2015. He then resumed tweeting his devotion to ABC’s Scandal, so, at the very least we know he has a sense of humor.

When assistant LSU Men’s Basketball coach Tom Kelsey tweeted an image of the newly designed court inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the Twitter-verse and local message boards lit up about a not-so-little detail hidden in plain sight: a newly designed Tiger head logo. For more than a decade now, many fans and art-savvy LSU supporters have decried the look of the modern Tiger head, often referred to negatively as “Toonces,” after Saturday Night Live‘s “driving cat” sketch. Plans for the new mark are apparently still under wraps as the athletic department did not respond to our requests for comment.

The organizers of NPR’s popular quiz show Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! issued a challenge to the Baton Rouge audience to one-up the enthusiasm of the New Orleans audience the show had a few years early. Locals responded overwhelmingly, with CNN contributor James Carville guest hosting, Mike the Tiger revving up the crowd and the LSU cheerleaders accompanying host Peter Sagal on stage. “You win, you win!” Sagal told the crowd. Boudin balls and catfish from Tony’s Seafood probably made an impression, too.
