Stately drink
Vodka, lime juice and ginger beer served in a tall glass or copper mug—those are the essentials of the straightforward Moscow Mule. It’s a refreshing cocktail many bartenders know how to make. But Huey’s Bar, the newest addition to Third Street downtown, gives it a unique spin that’s entirely local. The Louisiana Mule ($10) swaps ginger beer for Old New Orleans Rum’s Gingeroo, which combines the brand’s Crystal Rum with ginger soda and Louisiana sugar cane. Then comes a twist that’ll surely raise eyebrows: a splash of Canebrake beer from Parish Brewing Company in Broussard. The wheat ale gives it a citrusy kick and a honeyed hue that works surprisingly well. Garnished with mint or lime, the drink holds its own next to the Ramos Gin Fizz, Sazerac, Pimm’s Cup and other Southern classics Huey’s specializes in. The Kingfish would surely be proud. facebook.com/HueysBarBatonRouge
