Louisiana’s Royal band – Steam Royal Teeth’s Glow now
On Tuesday, Aug. 13, Royal Teeth releases its full-length debut album, Glow on Dangerbird Records.
In the past two years, wherever I was, I found myself catching up with a band member. From my perspective, it’s been fun to chart the meteoric rise of the band.
The band’s members are from Louisiana’s three big stops along I-10—Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. In just a couple months, they went from playing supporting gigs to local and out-of-town bands to filling out The Varsity.
At least, it seems that way to me. But the band keeps it all in perspective, making their sticky-sweet pop tunes even more impossible to resist.
“We definitely enjoy each moment and don’t take them for granted,” Larsen says. “We’ve put a lot of miles on out van. We’ve done a lot of touring and definitely put the work into it. We’re lucky we can dedicate ourselves to this full-time. The past year has been amazing.”
After the release of the 2012 EP Act Naturally, the band went on to play gigs with Gotye and Fitz and the Tantrums across the country. The disc’s song, “Wild,” appeared here, there and everywhere as well.
I’d call it a hit; the band would probably prefer the term “blessing.”
Glow is an extension of the band’s adventurous soundscape. For Larsen, each song focuses on capturing the moment.
“There’s a common back and forth with love, which I know is a pretty open term,” he says. “It can be interpreted in so many ways, whether it’s a relationship with friends, family or a significant other. [The album focuses on] the roller-coaster of those relationships mixed with the message to need to capture the moment with these people. That’s what we’re hoping to do.”
My full interview with Larsen will be in the September issue of 225. For now, you can stream Glow in its entirety here.
