Well Suited: That Thing You Do!

The 1960s is one of my favorite time periods in recent history. The music was rad. The clothes were eclectic and the hair high. New shapes were idealized and morals were tested. Minis were mini-er, curls were curlier. If you couldn’t tell, I was born in the wrong decade.

Now that Mad Men has brought this favorite time period to life in modern day, it is easier to see how 1960s styles can be worn today. Wiggle dresses have graced the runways for a few seasons while pointy-toed kitten heels can be spotted in retailers everywhere. The 1960s have taken over modern life—and I love it.

This look is inspired by the movie, That Thing You Do! Starring Liv Tyler, Tom Hanks, and Tom Everett Scott, a band from Pennsylvania makes it big on a kiss of death one-hit-wonder in 1964. The story line is total cheddar, but I still catch myself watching it every time it comes on TV. It has the same suck-you-in factor as Sister Act II—or maybe that’s just me.

The costume design in this gem is top shelf. From the shape of the bow ties to the polyester shirts, costume designer Colleen Atwood depicted the hometown guys & gals perfectly and glammed the supporting actors’ attire just enough.

For this outfit, I wanted to go with a solid 1960s mod shape and have matched accessories. No proper lady in that era would be caught dead mismatched, no ma’am. White accessories were all the rage during this time period and with Sgt. Pepper-style brogues & a marching band hat the look is complete.

If you want to go for a less kitschy vibe, ditch a hat and go with a beehive! With the amount of hair spray you’ll use that ozone layer issue won’t be one anymore because we all know that the higher the hair, the closer to God, y’all.
