The Whigs return – The Whigs, one of the more underrated rock bands from Athens, Ga., will perform this weekend.

One of the more underrated rock discs of 2012 came out of Athens, Ga., courtesy of The Whigs. On the band’s fourth album, Enjoy the Company, and in supremely tight live sets, the trio solidified its status as one of the better-sounding touring American bands. You can thank the band’s relentless, never-ending touring schedule for that. Saturday night’s show at The Varsity Theatre will be the second time the band has visited Baton Rouge this year. Greg Jacobs with Lipinski. Red Dragon Listening Room hosts this talented singer-songwriter. $20 seat donation. 8 p.m.
Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue. The country singer performs with her band for a rowdy night at Mud and Water. 9 p.m. $7.
Patrick Johnson, Todd Lemoine, Paul Johnson. A trio of songwriters perform at Chelsea’s Café. 10:30 p.m. $5.
Night Beds, Tristen. Indie rock fans will enjoy this night of tunes at the Spanish Moon. Tickets range from $10-$12. 10 p.m.
Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, Michael Foster Project. The Grammy-winning Zydeco performer Chubby Carrier plays at the Louisiana State Museum (Map it!) for a night of food, music and good times in this fundraiser for the museum. Tickets are $50, $35 for LSMF members, and $40 pre-sale.

Next week
Kendrick Lamar. The critically-acclaimed hip-hop artist brings his Good Kid, m.a.a.d. City tour to the Baton Rouge River Center next Monday. Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock will open. 8 p.m. Tickets range from $30-$45 and are available through Ticketmaster.
