Grilled cheese, Baton Rouge style

April is national Grilled Cheese Month, and while you could celebrate at home—prepping the standard two pieces of bread and American cheese on a skillet or in the oven—Baton Rouge has a few places that feature a brilliant take on the classic concept.

Each week, Magpie Café serves up a fresh take on the old grilled cheese concept. This Wednesday, Magpie featured a pesto grilled cheese on French bread. Visit Magpie’s Facebook page to see the café’s weekly menu.

Right down the road from Magpie is Chelsea’s Café, known for its epic six-cheese delight on homemade focaccia bread served with a bowl of spicy tomato soup. It’s a best seller, with good reason.

If you want a no-frills grilled cheese, Maxwell’s and Zeeland Street Market also offer choice selections. Maxwell’s sandwich is $3.99, and $4.99 with tomato. At Zeeland Street, you can get a grilled cheese sandwich for $3, and a grilled cheese po-boy for $5. —Matthew Sigur
