Take a ‘Brake’

Mud and Water’s owners have made it a point to feature local beers on tap. And since the downtown bar opened last fall, the Canebrake from the Parish Brewing Company in Broussard has emerged as their No. 1 seller. Mud and Water is a smoke-free live music haven with an inviting, fenced-in patio, all underneath the concrete and steel behemoth that is the Mississippi River Bridge. The bar’s taps feature Tin Roof beer from just down the road and Bayou Teche’s Biere Pale. But it’s been the Canebrake ($5 per pint, $4 from 4 to 8 p.m. every day, $8 for a pint and shot all day every day), wheat ale brewed with Steen’s cane syrup, that fills the most pint glasses. Canebrake is Andrew Godley’s flagship brand. Both the owner and brew master at Parish Brewing, Godley created Canebrake to be a refreshing, drinkable session beer with an authentic flavor of Louisiana. It is a wonderful beer for both seasoned craft beer connoisseurs and complete beer amateurs. Try it out on a warm April day on Mud and Water’s patio.
