Staying meatless for Lent

As Mardi Gras debauchery gives way to Lenten moderation for many, Louisianans can indulge in a whole different way with the “fish on Fridays” rule. Plenty of Baton Rouge restaurants offer Lenten specials that ensure you won’t feel like you’re missing out. Here are a few:

Zea Rotisserie and Grill: Launching their new menu on Ash Wednesday, Zea is attuned to the ebb and flow of Louisiana’s seafood season, offering Asian sesame oysters, barbecue shrimp and tuna sashimi for lunch and dinner—as well as crispy alligator tacos (it’s true—alligator doesn’t count!). zearestaurants.com

Times Grill: Another Louisiana-based chain that knows its way around seafood, the Times Grill offers a famous Catfish Tchefuncte special on Fridays—a filet over seasoned rice, topped with crawfish and pepperjack. There’s also all-you-can-eat crawfish Thursday through Saturday. timesgrill.com

Fat Cow Burgers: You might not expect a burger joint to be in on the Lenten goodness, but any Fat Cow burger patty can be subbed for a slab of grilled salmon—it just costs a little more. fatcowburgers.com

The Londoner: Church of England rules don’t apply at this pub, as you can stop by on Fridays for three pounds of crawfish, corn and potatoes every Friday in Lent. londonerbr.com
