On the eve of releasing his latest directorial effort, the historical CIA ops thriller Argo opens today, Ben Affleck gave a quick update on his long-in-development project about infamous Boston gangster and FBI informant “Whitey” Bulger. While Matt Damon has always been attached to play Bulger, and Boardwalk Empire scribe Terrence Winter is hammering out the script, Affleck let slip that the film will be a true biopic, ending with the mobster in his mid-80s.
Baton Rougeans will know that places the timeline well past Bulger’s stretch as one of “America’s Most Wanted” all the while he was hanging out as “Tom,” an unassuming lounge lizard on Grande Isle in the mid-1990s.
So, could Affleck be the next blockbuster director to take advantage of Louisiana’s film incentives and versatile topography to shoot a chunk of the film in the Bayou state? It is certainly possible, though Affleck says he’s likely to direct one more picture before tackling Bulger, meaning it could be 3 or 4 years before that decision is made. Either way, if Affleck brings the tasteful period details and rich supporting characters to the project that Argo certainly promises, it should be one worth watching.
Here is Affleck discussing Argo and what he recalls of the 1970s:
