Looper (in theaters Friday)

When a hired gun for the mob receives his next target and comes face-to-face with his future self, the mastermind’s attempt to “close the loop” on his time-traveling retribution scheme backfires in this Friday’s mind-bending action thriller Looper. Directed by Rian Johnson, the young talent behind Brick and The Brothers Bloom, Looper is set, largely, 30 years in the future when the mafia utilizes time travel to hide its bodies and its sins. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as a young contract killer in 2042 who’s life is thrown for a loop when his future self, played by Bruce Willis, turns up as his next victim from the year 2072.
It’s a high-concept trigger flick, and one that sends audiences on a wild ride through New Orleans and surrounding areas showing Johnson is able to add plenty of darker edges to his often-whimsical style. But can Gordon-Levitt and Willis team up to save themselves, or are both of them running out of time?
Emily Blunt, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano and Piper Perabo co-star. Rated R.
