Annual canning competition held in honor of Farmers Market week

National Farmers Market week is Aug. 5-11, and the Red Stick Farmers Market is celebrating the bounty of produce at Baton Rouge markets with the second annual Canning Competition. Home cooks are invited to enter their favorite preserved fruits and vegetables, jams, jellies, pickles, savory sauces, spreads and soups. Entries will be judged on general appearance, taste and use of local ingredients. Participants can bring entries to the Market Hospitality Booth at the Thursday (Pennington Biomedical Research Center off Kenilworth) and Saturday (501 Main Street) markets from 8 a.m. to noon until Aug. 11. There is no limit to the number of entries one can submit. A completed entry form must accompany each entry. Awards will be announced at 9 a.m. Aug. 18 inside Main Street Market. The entry form and contest rules can be found at redstickfarmersmarket.org.
