A fashion for music

Special thanks to Kerry Beary’s Atomic Pop Shop.

Kristen Kirschner

30, singer, ukulele, Polly Pry

My style is: Eclectic, vintage and Grand Ole Opry.

My fashion icon is: Loretta Lynn, circa 1970.

On stage, I would never want to wear: Swimwear of any kind would be an absolute no, and I think playing in a plush mascot suit would get in the way a little.

I would trade closets with: Nellie McKay. Her wardrobe has looks ranging from small-town pageant queen to senator’s wife during the Kennedy Administration. And she plays the ukulele, too, so I might find some extra strings or something in her pockets.

I can’t go a day without wearing: The wedding rings that my husband had custom-made for me are the only things I wear every single day. A jeweler in Canada made them out of raw, colored diamonds set in rose gold. Like most of what I like to wear, they are non-traditional and a bit offbeat.

I am currently listening to: Devandra Banhart—mostly because he sounds like Marc Bolan of T-Rex, my favorite band of all time—M. Ward, Hilbun and the Homewreckers, They Might Be Giants, Velvet Underground.

Jonathan Loubiere

27, guitarist, Dov Charney, The Diane Lanes, The Widowers

My style is: All about color, cut and fit.

My fashion icon is: The Boss—Darkness of the Edge of Town era, not Tunnel of Love era. Springsteen’s look back then was so classic American: worn v-necks, plaid shirts, worn jeans and leather jackets.

I want to swap closets with: Britt Daniel of Spoon.

On stage, I would never want to wear: One of those yellow Devo jumpsuits.

I can’t go a day without wearing: Chuck Taylors.

I am currently listening to: The Police, Eddie Floyd.

Nora Patterson

24, singer, Royal Teeth

My style is: Simple, eclectic and unique.

My fashion icon is: Jenny Lewis. She has great retro, folksy style. She always knows how to make a statement with her outfit and still keep it classy. Redheads need to stick together.

I want to swap closets with: Zooey Deschanel. Anytime I’ve seen her on stage, or anywhere really, I’m obsessed with what she’s wearing. I love her vintage, girly style.

On stage, I would never want to wear: Probably anything Lady Gaga would wear. I think she’s the only one that can pull off a dress made of raw meat.

I can’t go a day without wearing: A silver bracelet my mom gave me.

I am currently listening to: Adele, Givers, The Naked and Famous.
