Get a ‘Foundation’ in history at Magnolia Cemetery

The Foundation for Historical Louisiana will present their 27th annual commemorative ceremony for the Battle of Baton Rouge at Magnolia Cemetery on Saturday. Some of the fiercest Civil War fighting in Louisiana took place in and near the cemetery, making it both burial and battle ground. Find famous gravesites on the grounds, meet up with local Civil War re-enactors, and watch the color guard honor and remember those who fell at the site of the historic Union victory. Highlighting the event will be speaker Chip Landry, Southeast Brigade Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, who will present a story of Major Bolling Chinn, a Confederate soldier from Grosse Tete, who fought in the battle and is buried in the cemetery. 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Free to the public. fhl.org
