Finding vegetarian-friendly fare

Baton Rouge is lucky to have many different kinds of cuisine populating its dining scene—but if there’s one option it’s scanty on, it’s vegetarian-friendly dining. Baton Rougeans love their meat, with vegetables often relegated to sides or toppers. But here are a few places where vegetarians and just plain veggie-lovers can catch a break on the menu: MJ’s Café: This newly opened café in Mid City is a vegetarian’s paradise. A new, fresh selection of soups is served up daily by owner Maureen Joyce, alongside a clever collection of sandwiches and salads. A fresh fruit and goat cheese sandwich on a baguette alongside a bowl of summer squash soup is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The café also serves up seafood, so you can bring along your pescatarian friends. Truly Free: Truly Free has gained a great reputation for its owners’ willingness to go the extra mile for those with food allergies and diet restrictions. In addition to the nut-, gluten- and dairy-free offerings, the shop also has meatless paninis, vegan wraps, tempeh and tofu bowls, and much more. Add a side of sweet potato fries with agave nectar and you’ll find yourself fully satisfied. Bay Leaf: Bay Leaf offers more than a nod to traditional Indian vegetarian cuisine. A whole section of the menu is devoted to delicious vegetable plates, from baghare baigan—whole baby eggplant stuffed with spice and covered in coconut sauce—to mouthwatering potato curry and stewed lentils. Frankie’s: Vegetarians need not miss out on a good ol’ hotdog in the Capital City anymore—just go to Frankie’s, and chow down on a high-quality tofu dog. Any meat sausage can be replaced with tofu if you ask—including specialty dogs like the Chicago Dawg, which features peppers and sauerkraut, to the Greek Dawg, which includes hummus, feta, artichokes and black olives.
