Leaving a ‘Legacy’

Twenty years after the mysterious disappearance of brilliant high-tech entrepreneur Kevin Flynn, Flynn’s former business partner gets a message from beyond the digital grave that sends Flynn’s now-grown son Sam on a search to find his father who is alive somewhere in a fantastic and dangerous computerized realm of his own making in this Friday’s Tron: Legacy. This long-awaited follow-up to 1982’s original Tron dropped last year and arrives this week on DVD and Blu-ray. Garret Hedlund, soon to blow up as Dean Moriarity in On the Road, stars as Flynn’s son Sam and Jeff Bridges returns as both Flynn and the voice and likeness for Clu 2, a digital replica of Flynn that has turned on his mainframe master. Hedlund’s journey is one of survival through a neon-lit dreamscape, a futuristic Odyssey with cryptic strangers and gravity-defying games to the death, as he seeks out his dad and answers to why Flynn left so long ago. The film becomes a 3D experience about 20 minutes in when Sam first goes through the looking glass and into the world of Tron. Beau Garrett, John Hurt, Michael Sheen and Olivia Wilde co-star. Rated PG.
