Roundup: Izzo’s expanding into Birmingham … Chick-fil-A eyes College location … DeAngelo’s closes Lee location

Outward bound: Izzo’s Illegal Burrito is preparing to open its first location outside of Louisiana this summer. According to The Birmingham (Ala.) Business Journal, the Mexican chain will operate a restaurant in Birmingham, starting in July. Chick-fil-A eyes College location: Chick-fil-A has applied for a building permit to construct a restaurant on College Drive, at the site of the old Derek Chang’s Koto of Japan. If the restaurant gets the permit from the city-parish, then they will go ahead and lease the property, says George Kurz of Kurz & Hebert Commercial Real Estate, who has the listing for the Koto building. Exit strategy: Louis DeAngelo has shut down his West Lee Drive restaurant. DeAngelo says he had a deal to sublease the space in the Burbank Terrace Shopping Center to another restaurant operator, but the deal fell through around the end of 2010. By then, DeAngelo had committed to turning over the restaurant. The plans are for DeAngelo to sell the restaurant equipment to whatever operator takes it over and sublease the building. In the meantime, plans are in the works to open a Louis DeAngelo’s in Central and a new restaurant concept downtown.
