As seen in B.R.
You’ve seen the commercials.
Shaking, vibrating hand weights. The Mr. T. Oven. Ginsu Knives. The Slap Chop.
Ever wonder who buys this stuff?

A better question might be “who doesn’t?”
Cookbook author Holly Clegg recently abandoned her expensive stainless steel chef knives, replacing them in January with a $19.95 ceramic YoshiBlade she saw on TV. “It replaces all my other knives, from cutting fruit to meat to bread,” Clegg gushes.
InRegister Editor Ashley Sexton Gordon confides that, occasionally, she slips on her pair of lime-green Slipper Genie Mop Socks with Velcro, rag-mop soles to sop up small kitchen spills. “I asked for a pair for Christmas, but no one believed me,” Gordon says. “Then one day I spotted a pair in Wal-Mart. They’re so sassy!”
Turns out “As Seen on TV” could just as easily be called “As Seen in Baton Rouge Homes.”
We recently asked readers to tell us about their “As Seen on TV” confessions.
Some are goofy. Some are no bargain once you factor in shipping costs. Others turn out to be gems their owners even brag about. Here are some of our favorites.
Seeing the light
City-parish chief auditor Sharon Robinson spent $10 for a pair of HD Vision sunglasses, and she’s happy with her purchase. “They’re lightweight and really do lessen glare.”
HD Vision Sunglasses – $10, plus $6.99 S&H
Shake it off
Lee Bullard Haslitt, who works for a jewelry design firm, bought a set of those wacky-looking shaking hand weights. She exercises with them three or four times a week. “I’ve seen a difference,” Haslitt says. “The workouts are not too hard.”
Shake Weights – $19.95 plus $9.95 S&H
Pity the fool who doesn’t buy this oven!
Laura Griggs, communications specialist at Our Lady of the Lake, didn’t buy this product simply because Mr. T promotes it. She bought it because “you can take meat straight from the freezer to this oven and have it come out perfect—not dry.” The added bonus: “My kids love watching the food cook through its glass container.”
Flavorwave Oven Turbo – $119.85 plus $14.95 S&H
• Beware of shipping and handling charges.?
• Investigate before you order. S&H costs are sometimes as much as the product.
• Ask around and read consumer reviews to see if a product delivers on its promises.
• Money-back guarantees often don’t refund S&H.
• Watch out for “FREE” products. The product may be advertised as free, but they get you on extra shipping and handling charges.
Egg-cellent!
“Nothing beats this egg!” says Keith Cooper, a city-parish budget analyst, about the Ped-Egg pedicure foot file.
PedEgg – $10 plus $6.99 S&H
Square deal
Bridget DeSilva’s marketing department had an “ASOTV” Christmas gift exchange. She received the Perfect Brownie Baking Pan, which she boasts, “really does enable perfectly square brownies — while still warm!” The webmaster at Woman’s Hospital has even higher praise: “The kids find it fun!”
Perfect Brownie Baking Pan – $19.95 plus $8.95 S&H
A slice of heaven
Paralegal Cindy Denham, who loves entertaining, says, “With the Ginsu knives, my baked party goods were sliced to such perfection, you would have thought a professional bakery had prepared them.”
Ginsu knives come in sets of 8 to 16 pieces and cost anywhere ?from $40 to $68 at amazon.com.
Sticker shock
It was the ordering process for his Yoshi Blade that got dicey for retired pediatrician Dr. Wallace Dunlap. He kept being directed to more expensive items, but when he thought he’d finally ordered what he wanted, the bill cut him: “I received a credit card charge for $70 plus $67 S&H, totaling $137.88!” Dunlap says. “I am satisfied with the knives, but the S&H was a rip-off.”
5-inch Santoku YoshiBlade Knife – $19.99 plus $9.99 S&H.
