Restaurant review: Ichiban
Ichiban opened in 2003 at the dawn of the sushi explosion in the Capital City. Perhaps the quality of the food at this family-owned and -operated restaurant on Essen Lane had something to do with boosting the Japanese trend locally. Consistently ranked high in our Best of 225 survey, Ichiban finally topped the bill this year, taking gold in the Best Sushi category. Ichiban is owned and operated by the Wong family of brothers, and Randy Wong and his father Kit often make friendly rounds to tables and chat with patrons at the sushi bar. Together, they have crafted a classic, detail-oriented menu that offers both fresh fish and hibachi grill options, from ruby red Tuna Tataki and Salmon Naruto to Beef Teriaki and Gyoza Dumplings. Inside, the atmosphere is modern silver-sleek, and a down-tempo electronica soundtrack often complements the chic urban feel. Click here see what our secret diners thought of Ichiban.
