30seconds with Crystal Chatelain
What started out as a way to fight empty nest syndrome has turned into a long-time and deeply rewarding effort for Baton Rougean Crystal Chatelain.
After Chatelain’s son graduated from college and moved away, she quit her job at a local accounting firm and began looking for ways to pass the time.
Some St. Vincent de Paul television commercials intrigued her, so she decided to stop in. On that day, volunteers were busy putting together a mail-out. They made her feel right at home, so she sat down to help.

That was 10 years ago. The 57-year-old has been a loyal and hard-working volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul ever since, including in her service running the volunteer program.
With the holidays approaching, we asked Chatelain if her time and effort is worth it.
What do you actually do?
I started off serving in the dining room, then moved to volunteer coordinator (also unpaid) for 3 years, I was responsible for scheduling and accommodating everyone who called and was interested in volunteering. I had to make sure everyone had a place to volunteer.
Where did you get your sense of service?
I got the sense of volunteerism from my mother. She saw children who lived nearby and didn’t hesitate to clothe or feed them. We didn’t have much either, but my mom gave what she had.
Is everyone appreciative of the programs you have?
Some are very appreciative and outspoken, and some give a head nod. The fact that they continue to come shows me that they are happy to have the service.
What have you learned?
There is a lot of need out there. There are many people living at or below the poverty level.
What have you gotten out of it?
Until I started, I wasn’t really living. I’ve grown spiritually and I love helping God’s children.
What would you say to someone considering it?
Just take that plunge, make that call. If you try something and it doesn’t work, try another agency, another ministry, until you find a place that you are comfortable with.
