‘Amelia’ Air
Before the United States had flung off the remains of the Great Depression and prior to our entry into WWII, pilot Amelia Earhart, like Charles Lindbergh before her, grabbed the attention of the nation with her transatlantic and cross-country solo flights. With an enthusiasm for flying like few others before or since, Earhart made up for her apparent lack of technical aviation acumen to become a renowned distance pilot, celebrity figure, spokeswoman, model and magazine editor, often referred to as “Lady Lindy.” Oscar-winner Hilary Swank portrays Earhart from her early days of flight training to her final, fatal flight over the Pacific. Monsoon Wedding director Mira Nair tackles this sepia-toned biopic, and Richard Gere plays Earhart’s husband, book publisher George Putney. Christopher Eccleston and Ewan McGregor co-star. Rated PG.
