The ‘Main’ course

If making your breakfast special is on the menu, you definitely want to add Main Street Market to your weekly rotation. On Saturday mornings, this downtown destination is full of places to meet and munch; it will take a long time to graze your way through all the fresh-cooked wares on display. No matter your preferences, there’s something to suit every appetite.

The nonconformist: Start at Taste of Downtown, where you can whet your appetite with some of their delicious, cheesy breakfast quiche and a cup of fresh-brewed River Road Coffee. Then saunter down to Paul Wong’s Chinese and Sushi to try some of their savory breakfast muffins, stuffed with everything from mushrooms and spinach to cheddar cheese and bacon. Or you could sample one of their unusual breakfast pizzas or breakfast club sandwiches, piled with layers of ham, eggs, and bacon.

The traditionalist: Let the caterers from Socially Yours, Inc. , located in the Taylormade Gourmet booth, pile your plate high with crispy bacon, piping-hot biscuits, scrambled eggs and grits. On a game day, the line of hungry shoppers can stretch halfway down the market. Paul Wong’s also serves up hot, buttery grits, using Papa Tom’s fresh cornmeal, as well as skillet potatoes topped with cheese and green onion.

The sugar-lover: If you’re craving something super sweet, you need look no further than just outside for Say Saye ‘s fresh-baked cinnamon rolls with their finger-licking-good icing. But if your sweet tooth is still aching, venture indoors for one of Taste of Downtown ‘s hot and sweet fruit muffins. Then mosey over to Charlie’s Coffee and let one of the baristas there fix you a frothy mocha to wash it down.

The health nut: They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and nowhere do they take that more seriously than at Our Daily Bread, which serves up everything from fresh-squeezed orange juice to wheatgrass. Munch on a granola bar and get your antioxidants on with a berry blast smoothie, chock full of blueberries and raspberries. If fruit isn’t your thing, you can try some of their organically-grown coffee.
