Review: The Zydepunks Finisterre

When you first witness the Zydepunks live, you want to quit your job and take up the accordion, and then coax a second person to quit his or her job and take up the accordion, too. But after struggling to find a fiddler, learn six languages and get all those tattoos, you opt instead to join the fray of the drunk and the damned in the frenzied crowd and leave the “New Orleans Cajun Irish Breton Klezmer Slavic Zydeco” to the real pros. While the tracks on Finisterre embrace a variety of styles and languages, the whole feels like double squeezebox thunder: dramatic ballads and whiskey-soaked reels that sing the most universal themes of love, lust and loss.zydepunks.com

Essential Tracks: “Angel Whiskey,” “Por La Orilla Del Mar,” “Long Story Short”

Recommended if you like: The Pogues, Gogol Bordello, thinking what a pirate’s disco might be like.
