Dining round-up: Cane’s comes down with a case of March Madness … Copeland’s $1 million renovation on Essen … B.R. burrito chain expanding across the state

March madness: Raising Cane’s has launched a new ad campaign that piggybacks off “March Madness,” the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The billboard, print and e-mail campaign includes slogans such as “Feed your love of the game” and “Your game needs more dunking.” Playing off college basketball’s biggest event is a good fit for Cane’s, half of the company’s restaurants are in college towns. The trophy: Copeland’s completed a $1 million renovation of its Essen Lane restaurant, making it a franchise prototype promoting New Orleans roots and Creole cuisine. The size of the restaurant’s bar is smaller, giving it more of a pub feel with 12 more seats. Al Copeland Jr., chairman of Al Copeland Investments, says it was time to remodel the Baton Rouge restaurant, which had been open since 1994. “If you invest in the business, the loyal guests will come back more often,” he says. “You always gotta invest in the business.” Neato burrito: Izzo’s Illegal Burrito is set to open its first locations outside of Baton Rouge over the next few months. The first franchise-owned restaurant will open in Metairie next week. A second franchise-owned location will open in Lake Charles in early June, a few weeks ahead of a company store in Lafayette.
