Glam up for spring!
Joshua Barrett’s hairstyling and makeup skills came naturally at a young age. As a school boy growing up in a small town in Alabama, he was the child who amazed everyone with his ability to draw and paint. Joshua was the kid behind everything from designing the high school graduation announcements to painting the high school mascot on the gymnasium wall.
Joshua graduated college with a degree in fine arts. His good looks soon lured him to work as a model. It was then that he was introduced to the artistry inside the world of fashion and beauty. Soon he was working his magic in New York, Los Angeles, Australia and Europe.
With his approach to making each client aware of his or her unique individuality, Joshua became a favorite among the celebrity and editorial elite. His clientele includes Drew Barrymore, Julia Stiles, Kate Hudson, Meryl Streep, Amanda Peet, Ricky Martin, Ruby Dee, the B-52’s and Sheryl Crow. His work has appeared in magazines such as Allure, Glamour, In Style, Vogue and Vanity Fair.
Joshua currently resides in New York, but we got to know him when he came to Baton Rouge to do First Lady Supriya Jindal’s makeup for a photo shoot this winter. We asked him what advice we should give our readers about doing their makeup as winter turns to spring. Here’s his reply:
Hello ladies! The best thing you can start out with for spring is clean, glowing skin. You should always exfoliate to reveal the freshest layer of skin. This can be achieved with a mild scrub once a week in most cases.
* Always hydrate your skin in the morning and at night. In the morning, always try to use a moisturizer with at least an SPF 15 in the formula. Most daytime moisturizers contain an SPF factor these days. It’s very important to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun, which cause about 90% of visible aging of our skin. When it comes to makeup application, many foundations also contain a significant SPF, but I feel it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting your precious skin from the sun. To achieve a fresh, springtime look, always use an SPF 15 moisturizer prior to applying makeup. Then apply a light foundation, or a tinted moisturizer, depending on how much coverage you need.
* Apply a neutral eyeshadow in a gold tone. Because of the warmth of gold tones, it warms up light to dark skin tones. Gold truly works for everyone!
* Try a gray pencil along the lashline, instead of black, for a defined yet soft eye. One item no woman should be without is an eyelash curler! It opens up your eye and can make a dramatic difference! Add a coat of your favorite mascara and brush your eyebrows to finish with the eyes.
* A little cream blush on the cheeks in a lighter shade is best for spring. You can even use a cream blush as a lipcolor! Add a clear gloss and your lips will look luscious all day long.
* For evening, try a slighty more dramatic eye. This is easily done with a black liner on top of the gray you used for daytime. Always blend it softly, creating a sultry, sexy, not-quite-perfect eye statement. Pump up your lips with a little more color, perhaps even red “Hollywood” lips for a night out on the town.
There are many options for you all; just remember, there are no rules when it comes to makeup! Have fun with color … it’s spring … time to come out of hibernation and let your fresh spring face shine for the whole world to see!
