Twilight in theaters Friday

In 1964 Paul McCartney stumbled out of bed with the melody of the song from his dream ringing in his head. He went to the piano and casually plinked out the chords to “Yesterday,” which would become the most covered song in the history of pop music. In 2003 Stephenie Meyer dreamt of a vampire who fell in love with a woman while thirsting for her blood. Though she’d never published a word, she quickly outlined her dream, which became the basis for an entire chapter in Twilight, the 2005 novel that earned her critical and popular praise, plus $750,000 from a top publishing company. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson bring Meyer’s dark romance to life as Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, the vampire who loves her. Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the excellent Lords of Dogtown, helms this first in a likely trilogy of Meyer adaptations. Rated PG-13. (Photo courtesy Summit Entertainment)
