“I went to Glen Oaks High School and was Library Club president my senior year. At the school art show that year, I admired a painting done by a student, Jackie Robinson. I was drawn to it by the colors—blues and greens—and that the man had no head, hands or feet. He was disconnected, just a body, which was how I felt. Glen Oaks held a school assembly at the end of each year to give out awards, which were typically silver bowls engraved with students’ names. But instead of a silver bowl, the librarian asked Jackie to paint a smaller version of his work to give to me. I’ve carried this painting with me all over the place. It hangs up in my store, and people always want to buy it, but it’s not for sale. It’s special.”
