Mark Wahlberg inflicts Max Payne Friday

The good news is that movies based on videogames are getting better. Street Fighter this isn’t, but Mark Wahlberg’s new shoot ‘em up, Max Payne, still aims right down the barrel of the gamer and gunslinger wheelhouse. There’s plenty of action and flash in this high-stakes actioner. As a tough-as-nails DEA agent in New York City, Wahlberg is determined to find the junkies who murdered his family and bring them to justice. Joining him is Mona Sax, an assassin played by Mila Kunis. With visual stylings leaning conservatively toward Sin City and The Spirit, Payne is a visual thrill ride, even if it isn’t an emotional one. Beau Bridges, Chris O’Donnell and Ludacris co-star. Rated PG-13.
