Saturday’s the night to stroll downtown sidewalks
Tango. Fashion. Jazz. Hippie culture. There’s just so much going on downtown Saturday night, starting with TangoCOOL, nontraditional tango music for those who haven’t had the first lesson. $5 donation at the door. 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Arts Council on Laurel Street. Then stroll up the sidewalk toward the river, and swing by Red Star for some 1930s-era jazz by New Orleans dame Linnzi Zaorski. Don’t forget to wish happy birthday to Red Star’s owner, Frank McMains, while you’re there. Then skip over to 600 Main for an exotic fashion show featuring ’80s pop and hip-hop grooves from the award-winning DJ Kemistry of New Orleans. Just be careful of their ever-evolving, very strict dress code: No shorts, no sandals, no ball caps, no white tennis shoes, no baggy clothing and nothing that goes against the door guy’s taste in style. $10 entry fee. If you stroll a little farther east on Main to Hound Dogs, no one will care what you wear as they celebrate 1960s culture. Show up in bellbottoms or anything from that era of psychedelic rock and be eligible for prizes. Free!
