Understanding Louisiana’s new child custody law
Sponsored by The Law Office of Ivy L. Graham
As of August 1, Louisiana’s updated child custody law establishes a presumption of equal, 50/50 custody unless evidence shows otherwise. While the change may create opportunities for parents to revisit existing arrangements, equal custody is not guaranteed.
At The Law Office of Ivy L. Graham, attorneys Ivy L. Graham and Chantee Horning help families navigate custody disputes, divorce and changing family dynamics. Existing custody orders will not automatically change under the new law. Parents seeking a different arrangement must file with the court for review.
The legislation also changes how long certain custody judgments issued after a full trial remain in effect. Previously, these judgments could be difficult to modify and potentially remain in place until a child turned 18. Under the new law, they may be reviewed after five years.
The firm helps parents understand their legal options and determine appropriate next steps.
