Inside Look: Enjoy handmade dumplings and Cajun-infused dishes at this new eatery

A new Asian-fusion restaurant is serving bao, noodles and lots of dumplings in Baton Rouge. 

Dumpling Hour, which started in Lafayette, opened its third location on Wednesday, Sept. 2, on Corporate Blvd. 

The restaurant is best known for handmade dumplings prepared in a variety of ways, including steamed, pan-fried and soup dumplings. All dumplings are made with fresh ingredients and prepared by the chef each day. 

On the menu, customers will find a mix of classic Chinese Szechuan dishes, an assortment of dumplings and some creative Cajun-infused items like Asian Cracklin Chicken, a Best Stop Boudin Pancake, and a Louisiana crawfish and pork rice wrap. 

Manager Corinna Wang recommends the Xiao Long Bao, an order of soup dumplings that comes with pork, chicken or pork with crab meat, for first-time customers. Wang’s personal favorite is one of the Szechuan dishes: Chef Su’s Spicy Beef with Noodles. While she loves the spice, Wang notes that there are also non-spicy meal options for less adventurous eaters. She says the General Tso’s Chicken is a good choice for all palates. 

This new location’s menu will remain consistent with the other locations for now. 

Inside the restaurant, which used to house a Serop’s, there are plenty of seating options and large tables with enough room to slide around shared dishes. If you’re confused about any items on the menu, QR codes on each table let customers scan to see photos of the dishes.

Wang has over 12 years of experience in the restaurant industry and says she was drawn to Dumpling Hour because it is a family-run business. The manager is committed to improving the customer experience day by day. 

“I want good quality,” Wang says. “I’ll keep working towards that goal. I want to give more for the customers.” 

The restaurant will be in its soft opening phase for about a month, Wang predicts. As time goes on, the restaurant is working to operate at full speed. 

“We’re still adding some more items to our restaurant,” she says. “It’s not all prepared yet, so I want to keep things simple right now and add things little by little to keep it fresh.” 

Dumpling Hour is open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. It is located at 7474 Corporate Blvd., Ste. 307.
