It’s safe to say the LSU football program’s makeover this offseason is one of the most drastic in school history. On top of the slew of coaching changes that come with a head coach regime change, the current state of the transfer portal allows players to switch schools easier than ever. It’ll be a new-look LSU basically from top to bottom, but there will be plenty of familiar faces for Lane Kiffin. Get to know the 10 coaches and 4 players who followed the Tiger’s new coach from Ole Miss to LSU this year:

Coaches

Charlie Weis Jr., offensive coordinator

Weis has been with Kiffin at several stops in his career, including Alabama, Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss. He’s Kiffin’s right-hand man when it comes to crafting creative offenses, and he will likely call plays for LSU this fall.

Joe Cox, co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach

Cox is filling the same role with the Tigers that he did with the Rebels last season, where he helped devise one of the nation’s best offenses. He’ll have plenty of weapons to work with this season.

Kevin Smith, assistant head coach/running backs coach

After playing pro for six years, Smith began his coaching career at his alma mater, Central Florida, in 2015. He’s been Kiffin’s running backs coach all but one season since 2017 and earned enough respect to land the assistant head coach title this year.

Dane Stevens, quarterbacks coach

Stevens’ work speaks for itself. He was a senior analyst and passing game specialist for an Ole Miss offense that racked up 59 total touchdowns and nearly 38 points per game. He’s also credited with helping develop New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart.

George McDonald, passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach

McDonald comes with a wealth of experience playing or working under well-respected college coaches. He’ll have a completely revamped wide receiver room to work with this fall, and his recruiting prowess will help bring more talent to campus.

James Cregg, run-game specialist/offensive line coach

This name might ring a bell for some Tiger fans. Cregg previously served as LSU’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator from 2018 to 2020, when he most notably assembled a unit that won the Joe Moore Award for best offensive line in the country.

Sawyer Jordan, inside wide receivers coach

Jordan has been working his way up the coaching ranks since starting as a student assistant at Clemson in 2013. He has experience at UL-Lafayette, South Florida, Coastal Carolina and Ole Miss and impressed Kiffin enough last season that he wanted him in Baton Rouge this fall.

Chris Kiffin, co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach

Lane’s brother has two decades of coaching experience spanning both college and the NFL. He was a defensive analyst for the Rebels last year, so he’ll have a much larger on-field role this season as he teams up with Blake Baker to run the defense.

Lou Spanos, assistant defensive line/pass rush specialist

Spanos brings nearly 20 years of NFL coaching experience with the Steelers, Redskins and Titans. He’s also well-seasoned in the SEC, having made stops at Alabama and most recently as a defensive analyst for Ole Miss.

Nick Savage, head strength and conditioning coach

Savage has worked with Kiffin since 2022 and has prior SEC experience at Florida and Mississippi State. He’ll be tasked with getting all this new group from across the country ready for the SEC.
