All about movement

Garland Goodwin Wilson calls this a non-traditional season for Of Moving Colors. In lieu of a first performance, the local dance-theatre organization set out across the city, staging photo and video shoots with its dancers in front of familiar and not-so-familiar local landmarks.

Of Moving Colors has been around since the 1980s, always offering a fresh twist on the typical arts events in Baton Rouge. Its 27th season, “Color Me Rouge,” looks to continue that tradition.

“We [want to] open up these places around Baton Rouge that people might not have seen, or might not be able to see, from a new perspective,” Goodwin Wilson says. “The whole vision is that we can use dance as a catalyst to bring the community together in a different way.”

The shoots will be included in their marketing campaign throughout the season, culminating in an April 2014 performance that references the entire series. The company also plans to publish a photo book of the project.

Regular productions like the Zombie Bash in October and Kick It Out in January—featuring hopeful young dancers from throughout the community—are still on the schedule. And for those wanting a taste of what’s to come, a season kick-off party will be held at The Crescent at University Lake this month, featuring a performance in and around the terrace pool.

“It’s a big endeavor,” Goodwin Wilson told us after an early rehearsal. “We have to be swimmers and water dancers; but it’s nice to be out of your comfort zone sometimes.”

The kick-off party is set for ?Sept. 20. For more information on the 2013-2014 season, visit ofmovingcolors.org.
