Emily Turner’s jams – Show me yours

Emily Turner, the 25-year-old anchor of Fox 44’s 9 p.m. newscast, was born in Hawaii, but was so young when she moved to San Diego she doesn’t remember much about her home state. Her Filipina mother met her U.S. Navy dad in the Philippines, and her mom still doesn’t know much English.

And as anyone who has seen her recent commercial knows, Turner is very close to her family. In fact, she still tears up when talking about how she left them to come to LSU. But besides her family, her biggest influence was playing softball here.

“Everything I am, I owe to LSU softball,” Turner says.

She became LSU’s starting pitcher as a sophomore, and by her junior year she was an All-American.

After college, she got another big break: “I’m at a co-ed softball tournament walking around trying to find a team to play on, when [then] general manager of NBC [Channel 33] asked me if I’d like to give broadcasting a try. I did, and afterwards he said I was good at it.”

She’s been working in television since, although nothing was handed to her. “From there I was a page,” she explains, “then they allowed me to report; then I worked on assignments, or shot video—I did anything they asked me to do.”

Besides her current anchor job, Turner also coaches kids, teaching them the ropes in pitching. Always giving back, she has given away most of her LSU memorabilia, including her cleats and gloves.

Teaching what she’s learned is her way of giving back. “I’ve made mistakes, and I’ve failed,” she admits, “but I fixed them. I’ve learned because I was thrown into the fire.”

When it comes to relieving the stress of anchor work, Turner enjoys listening to music. “Music makes me smile. I can get into a good mood by turning up certain jams, and when no one is looking, I can rock out and lip sync!”
