Riffs: Amy Mitchell Smith, executive director, Baton Rouge Film Commission

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

“There’s quite a bit of excitement and momentum these days surrounding a movement called ‘Mumblecore,’ or DIY—do it yourself—filmmaking. Several years back, Louisiana natives the Duplass brothers made a fantastic relationship road movie called The Puffy Chair, which was instrumental in launching this movement. Producing, writing, directing and starring in the film themselves, Mark and Jay Duplass created a little gem that is spontaneous, accessible, funny, heartbreaking and most of all, honest. Can you say that about the latest films you saw at the multiplex? Here’s hoping this is our generation’s version of the French New Wave.”
