What's in a name?

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Customers routinely ask about his restaurant’s unusual name, and owner Norman Sparrow offers an answer with some spiritual depth.

“The name arrived through prayer,” Sparrow explains. “It was a revelation.”

The phrase, “Jesus is the bread of life,” made perfect sense to Sparrow while he was brainstorming a name for his new restaurant. “You need him to live, and you need food to live.”

Sparrow aspires to serve more than mere sustenance, so it’s perhaps appropriate that the name of his restaurant came as divine inspiration.

The name “The Table is Bread” came to him while he was praying.

“It’s soul food,” Sparrow says, “but if you need peace, love, joy, that’s all here, too.”

Soon after “The Table is Bread” came to him, he learned it’s also the title of a gospel song by Richard Smallwood.

“As soon as I heard that, it all came together,” Sparrow says.

The Table is Bread is at 4748 Airline Hwy.
