Maybe P.T. Barnum and James Bailey had it right. Using the classic three-ring circus for inspiration, this year’s Voodoo Music Experience lays out a variety of thrills on a trio of distinct stages. New Orleans-style jazz, blues and funk acts like Preservation Hall, Ivan Neville and Trombone Shorty dominate the Louisiana-centric Le Flambeau stage. The appropriately christened Le Carnival stage gets even wilder with more experimental regional artists like Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Liquidrone, and Dax Riggs of Deadboy and the Elephantmen. And over on the Le Ritual stage, Voodoo’s marquee rock bands Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Spoon and Wilco should keep the crowds coming.
After perhaps only Coachella, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits, Voodoo Fest has become one of the top concert draws in the country. More than 93,000 people attended last year to see Voodoo return to New Orleans after Katrina forced much of the concert’s lineup to relocate to Memphis in 2005. Festival organizers expect even more music fans this year.
The Voodoo Music Experience is Oct. 26-28 at City Park in New Orleans. Weekend tickets are $115. voodoomusicfest.com
