1. Window treatments. Our home is the well-known “French House” in University Hills, built in the 1930s as a replica of Marie Antionette’s hamlet outside of Versailles. We wanted to make one large entertainment space for our kitchen/dining room/den. Our contractor Aaron Smith and his crew handcrafted the windows across the back of the house to match the original front windows, allowing in lots of natural light and a spectacular view of the yard.
2. Floors, cabinets and ceiling. I love Domino magazine. I copied the colors (down to the floor stain) from a house they featured in Grayton Beach, Fla. I love the white cabinets, dark-stained floors and a slight gray ceiling. It makes the tribal rugs from Mom’s collection and the colorful art pop.
3. Cabinet pulls. The funky, hand-wrought iron cabinet pulls add depth. They come from our architect Duane Carruth’s store, The Front Door.
4. Island. The island is the center of the space. The old boards on the face are from our contractor’s house in Beauregard Town. The original intent was to paint them white, but the patina and rust from the old nails added too much character and warmth to cover up. The honed granite countertops from Capital Stone provide a less formal look for the island.
