Seeing crimson

Nick Saban’s arrival at archrival Alabama just keeps getting Tiger fans stirred up. The new Crimson Tide coach was apparently conducting an interview in which he asked to keep a story off the record, but someone’s tape recorder kept rolling. The result: a recording of what sure sounds like Saban offering a sorry impression of “a ditch-digging Louisiana coon ass.” Listen for yourself at onepeat.com/dirtysaban.mp3.

Even Tiger Coach Les Miles seems to be fired up about it all. At the Bayou Bash recruiting party at the River Center last month, Miles dropped an f-bomb at the podium, describing LSU’s potent rivalry with “f---ing Alabama.” Miles later apologized for using the word. If the off-season is this hot, imagine what game day will be like Nov. 3 when the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa.

21 Up

Chelsea’s Café is the latest bar to refuse admission to those between the ages of 18 and 20. The change came after the bar was fined for serving an alcoholic beverage to an underage, undercover agent for the parish Office of Beverage Control. On the first night of the new policy, owner Dave Remmetter says Chelsea’s only turned away 10 people for being under age. By law, patrons older than 18 are allowed in but must not be served alcohol. “We want to make sure there is no underage drinking in our establishment,” Remmetter says. ” I feel bad for [18-20-year-olds] because the bands are good, but it takes a load off of me and my staff.”

Same old spider

Metro Councilman Wayne “Spider” Carter is up to his old tricks: kicking people he disagrees with off parish boards and commissions. Spider’s most recent target was BREC Commissioner Carroll Breeden, who in January lost his bid for a third term on the parks agency’s governing board.

Despite pledges of support from several Metro Council members, a dozen letters of recommendation from elected and appointed officials and the backing of Commission Chairman Collis Temple Jr., Breeden got only one vote on the Council when his name came up for reappointment in January.

At least twice—once in 2005 and again in 2006—Carter promised to have Breeden booted off the commission. As several other appointed board and commission members have found out, Carter can deliver on his promises. Carter did not return our calls seeking comment.
