Hello again, Sushi
Hello Sushi, which won over LSU-area sushi enthusiasts with fresh fare served in stylish surroundings, has opened a second location on Highland Road, just north of Interstate 10 near Blue Bayou Water Park. “We’re keeping the energy and continuing to concentrate on the Japanese pop vibe,” owner Angela Finch says. But the new version, within close proximity to ritzy addresses like Country Club of Louisiana, will be slightly more refined. “It’s different due to the demographics.” More wines, additional entrées and a children’s menu will accent the J-pop vibe. “We’re really excited to be in good company with all the neighboring restaurants.”
Time for supper
Supper clubs first made their mark in the 1930s and 40s, emerging as American dining establishments serving as both restaurant and nightclub, with dancing, music and entertainment after the meal. It’s Frank Sinatra meets the Copacabana meets fine dining.
Primo’s Steak & Louisiana Cuisine on Bluebonnet Boulevard is bringing back this grand old dining tradition with a supper club of its own geared toward an older crowd, but not discriminatingly so.
“Everyone is welcome, it’s not limited to any one particular group,” says general manager Matt Merchant. “But, we do find that people 40 to 60 are really taken with the idea.”
Primo’s is still serving up top-notch cuisine, but after dinner the lights dim and the dance floor comes out. With music ranging from swingin’ standards to classic pop hits, there is something for everyone. Thursday to Saturday, 10 p.m.
XTremely nutritious
If visiting Plucker’s on Nicholson near LSU, you might consider its neighbor, XTreme Nutrition—it may have even more protein (50 grams per smoothie). The drinks have no additional sugar and are made with fresh fruit. Owner Mike Cox, who has worked with professional athletes, also offers fitness plans.
Yoga, spa-style
Next time you are looking to get your yoga on, make your way over to the Towne Center’s newest addition, Lotus Yoga, opening Sept. 1. “Lotus is the only yoga spa in the state offering a diverse menu of services, including yoga instruction for all ages and fitness levels,” Phi Truong says. So whether you are looking for hot and sweaty yoga or to learn tai chi, stop by for two complimentary yoga days on Saturdays, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, and enjoy the calming, spa-like studio that will give you flexibility of the mind. lotusyogabr.com
Back in business in Baker
Stephen and Kelly Lee met 10 years ago at Baker Little Theatre while working on a production of Heaven Can Wait, so they jumped at the chance to buy the failing community theater and revitalize it.
The Lees have spent several months ripping out dated carpets, painting the drab walls and giving the 110-seat theater a more modern feel. Also, the theater has improved concessions (including beer and wine), and the addition of Sunday matinees.
On Sept. 1, the Lees had a grand re-opening gala and open house to reintroduce patrons to their new Baker Little Theatre.
“This isn’t just our theater, it belongs to this community,” Kelly Lee says. “Baton Rouge has a couple of great theaters, but we would like to give the people of the Baker/Zachary area a great theater right down the road.”
