As a freelance gaffer Phil Beard has to be prepared to work well under pressure for 10 to 12 hours at a stretch. He owns Beard & Co. Lighting, Grip and Equipment Services in Baton Rouge, and spent six years as an actor in New York City.

“The best description I’ve heard for (grips and gaffers) is ‘intelligent muscle,’” says the 55-year-old who studied the technical side of filmmaking at Hunter College. “It’s really creative labor.”
Skilled in laying dolly track and camera mounting, Beard has worked on a range of projects from Interview With the Vampire to Mike Foster campaign spots to the upcoming Little Chenier.

This guy is vey cool. He and his wife Beth are awesome. They rented some equipment for a short I shot in B.R.
